Flowing Through

Leon waited outside the bathroom door with his arms crossed and a faint scowl on his face. He wanted in the worst possible way to just kick the damn door in but didn't think D would appreciate the gesture. Leon scuffed the carpet with his foot in frustration. He could hear D retching in the other room. It wasn't like a thin piece of wood was going to keep him from knowing what was going on and on top of it he was linked, roped, bonded, or whatever it was called and he could 'feel' what D was going through in if only in a distant way. He wanted badly to do 'something' to help, anything but stand there like a bump on log feeling absolutely useless. It didn't help any to feel D tremble in his mind the exhaustion pouring through the bond into him. D wasn't going to voluntarily open the door for him. In fact the kami was mortified to be sick in front of Leon and had slammed and locked the door when the first wave of nausea had rolled through his body. Leon had tried in vain to get him to relent but D hadn't budged. The Count's voice came through the barrier weak and muffled.

"Please, Leon-san, leave me alone. Go elsewhere." Leon bunched in tighter on himself the frown deepening on his face.

"NO, NOW OPEN THE DAMN DOOR!!!!!" He shouted back. He eyed the hinges sizing up the kind of strength the metal had. He was sure he could kick it in but rejected the idea out of hand, too much possibility of hurting D and the baby for that.

D's aggravated sigh echoed through his mind but Leon stubbornly held his ground reflecting back his frustration and concern.

"I am fine Leon. It is morning sickness. Now please leave me be." Leon rolled his eyes at the ceiling and threw his hands up over his head and was surprised to hear D laugh on the other side.

"What's so f***kin funny?" D laughed again weakly but ended it on a sob as his stomach clenched again in retaliation. Leon felt the weird sensation of cold ceramic against his forehead and realized that D had laid his head against either the toilet or the tub.

"Hey, you all right in there? Can I get you anything?" Leon remembered bringing his mother gingerale and saltine crackers when she had had morning sickness with Chris but didn't know if the same would work for the kami. Leon slid down to floor and laid his own head against the wood grain of the doorframe. He was tired of struggling and clung to the other presence in his neural pathways giving it all he could consciously of his love.

"Come on, baby, let me in. Please." He could hear and feel D breathing in and out deeply trying to control the convulsive shudders in him.

"Come on, please, I just want to help." Leon whispered trusting in the link to carry the message. He knew when D curled on the floor in a tight ball and it made him ache to hold him. He waited patiently, his own breath held, as he felt D's resistance chip away. D wanted to be comforted more then anything else and it gradually overrode the embarrassment in him. Leon could sense the shifts in mood in D and toned down his own high emotions by force of will. It took several more long endless minutes before D lifted his upper body and stretched out with trembling fingers for the lock. Leon exhaled with the soft click of its mechanism opening. He met the dulled pair of mismatched eyes and offered a small smile.

"Hey, baby." Leon's blunt fingers brushed the pale face in front of him carefully. D was propped up on one arm. His free hand closed around the lapels of the Leon's bathroom holding the oversized garment closed around his chest. Lavender bruises rimmed his eyes and a cold sheen of sweat glistened on his brow. Leon couldn't remember a time when he had looked more fragile or lost. Leon pulled himself into the narrow space and knelt beside him. He held D in a loose embrace allowing the kami to move if necessary.

D leaned into him resting his head on his shoulder. Spent and worn out D let Leon take the lead and didn't protest when the detective lifted him gingerly from the floor. He closed his eyes instead to shut out the visual stimuli around him and let Leon carry him to the couch. He kept them firmly closed too upon being laid down. He snuggled into the blanket Leon brought him relishing the soft warmth and lingering scent of his beloved. He listened while Leon banged around in the kitchen bringing back a large empty pot that was placed with a hollow tink on the floor by his head followed by another pot that made a heavy sloshing sound when set on the coffee table. The sounds of a cloth being wrung out drifted down to him but by the time Leon actually placed the folded washcloth on his brow D had already begun to slip into a light doze. Leon carefully washed away the dampness clinging to his skin and pulled and tucked the blankets up around him. Satisfied Leon sat down on the carpet his long legs sprawled in front of him and reached for a sports magazine from the table. He sat peacefully and read occasionally tuning into his partner and his child ready willing and able to defend and protect his family.
